Tess Coleman to Volunteer at Terra Nova Academy in Kampala, Uganda this Summer
We are delighted to announce that Tess Coleman will be spending a month in Kampala, Uganda this summer as a volunteer with Terra Nova Academy. Many of you remember meeting Lauren’s friends, Abdul and Alisha Damron-Seruyange – the co-directors of Terra Nova, when they visited us at GFBC last summer. Abdul and Alisha are committed to serving God by working toward alleviating poverty through Christian education. They are passionate about empowering, educating and encouraging Ugandan kids, and they do this at Terra Nova through their Christian preschool, which opened January of 2013, and their soccer program that helps to connect local students with scholarships to go to school.
Tess will spend half of her time at the preschool and half of her time at the soccer academy, teaching little girls soccer lessons. Tess describes her calling to this volunteer work in this way: “I am so blessed to have this opportunity. Since the day Alisha and Abdul came to GFBC, I felt God calling me to Uganda. Soccer has been a passion of mine for so many years, and I feel led to teach the children of Uganda a sport I love. As an education major at Meredith College, this is an amazing chance for me to see how the education system works in other parts of the world and to gain valuable lessons in the classroom. I am positive that after my time spent in Uganda, I will have fallen in love with every child there and will have gained experiences that I can only imagine.” Please pray for Tess as she embarks on this spiritual journey.
We are also collecting new and gently, used soccer cleats for children and youth to send with Tess. You can learn more about Terra Nova Academy at terranovaacademy.wordpress.com.
