Class Descriptions

  • Adult 1 includes people in college to late 20s. The materials are generally chosen by the teachers and include Smyth & Helwys Formations. Teachers rotate on a regular basis. We also currently participate in the church missions opportunities as we are able. (Top)
  • Adult 2 is made up of people in their 20s to their 40s, and many have preschool age children. We use the Formations materials and periodically have a special study. When we use alternate materials, we discuss and decide as a class what to study. We rotate teachers monthly among several members of the class. We participate in the outreach to the Chatham Creek and we are looking to grow our participation in other missions' opportunities. We enjoy fellowship with each other, including food the first Sunday of each month, lunch together the last Sunday of each month, and other social gatherings outside of class. We are an informal group that strives to be a warm and caring community. (Top)
  • Adult 3 is a class that ranges in age from 35 to 50. We have three teachers who lead discussion-oriented classes. Study materials rotate between the Smyth & Helwys Formations and books chosen by class members. Book studies might concern a book of the Bible, spiritual growth and discipline, or contemporary issues of interest and relevant to Christians. Within our class, we divide into committees to plan activities and to participate in outreach and missions. About four times each year, the class participates in a local mission activity and we also gather monthly with our children for a potluck dinner and fellowship. (Top)
  • Adult 5 is a class made up of "Boomers" whose children are mostly youth-aged and above. We have a fairly large group of folks who teach on an irregular rotation. We use the Smyth & Helwys Formations study guide 11 months of the year and we choose a special study during the month of August. We participate in Chatham Creek, a meal for Wake Interfaith Hospitality, and various one-time activities. We have food regularly and think of our lessons as an open discussion time. (Top)
  • Adult 8 (Howard Beard SS Class) consists of mostly couples age 45 to 60. We have one teacher and we use the Smyth & Helwys Formations materials. We are a small class and very tight-knit. We have an email contact list as well as a phone directory book so that we can keep in contact with our members who have moved away. We support various missions' projects such as Samaritan's Purse, HOPE mission projects, CBF mission projects, and Disaster Relief through CBF. Many of our members also help with Wednesday night supper. (Top)
  • Adult 9 is a class of couples over age 55. On average, we have about a dozen members present on a given Sunday. We study the Smyth & Helwys Formations literature, urging discussion of the material as it applies to our daily lives. We participate in various mission activities such as HOPE, Wake Interfaith, Carying Place, Chatham Creek services, and the Food Bank. Several members help with Wednesday night supper. We have at least 2 class socials a year. (Top)
  • Adult 10 is generally not age-specific as we have members who have elementary school children all the way to grandparents. Most class members have children who have reached independent status. We do not use standard literature and instead operate in a "book club" fashion. We conduct self-paced reading and discussion of books covering a broad range of Christian topics. Book choices are made by the class. Recommendations for new study materials are solicited and received from time to time. We have a discussion leader who conducts the discussion each week and manages the reading schedule for the current book. In the past, we have supported Relay for Life, HOPE mission projects, the Dorcas Shop, and other church-sponsored missions. We also support Building Together, an inner-city women's ministry in Raleigh. We have an annual after Christmas Party in January. (Top)
  • Adult 11 is a class for couples and singles consisting of two groups (A & B). The two groups meet together for 15 minutes for announcements and prayer after which each group meets for a 45-minute lesson time. Class members contribute weekly to a class fund which is used for various projects. The class has supported the HOPE projects, the Carying Place, the Salvation Army Ring the Bell, and provides help at Christmas for families in need. The class enjoys an annual Christmas party and occasional social functions.
Group A uses the church furnished Smyth & Helwys literature which is designed to study scriptures seriously within the context of the larger Christian tradition, and through this process find their faith renewed, challenged and strengthened. This Group believes the study of Biblical scriptures with help from the Holy Spirit affects their current lives and prepares them for church worship. This Group rotates its teachers on a weekly basis with each coming from different backgrounds and personal experiences. Member's ages range from about 60 to 80 and over. All are encouraged to participate in class discussion.
Group B reads, studies, and discusses a variety of scriptures and other material. The group includes individuals with a variety of backgrounds, all on a common Christian journey. The best Sundays occur when discussion prevails and members share their own life experiences. Study topics include the Bible, contemporary issues, and books that inform and stimulate our Christian growth. Class members volunteer to coordinate the discussion on specific Sundays. Occasional guest speakers address special topics. The ages of members of this group cover the spectrum. For more information.
