Stephen leads our congregation's musical life, provides vision and direction for worship, and heads up the discipleship ministry. He brings an exceptional background in directing church music, in understanding the theology of worship, and in helping people discover the connection between worship and faith formation. He conducts our Sanctuary and Youth choirs, directs our Praise Team, leads congregational singing in worship, and provides oversight for children's choirs, handbells, and other GFBC music programs. He also leads adult faith formation opportunities and assists the Senior Pastor with preaching and congregational care.
Stephen has a Bachelor of Music in Church Music from Furman University and a Master of Sacred Music in Choral Conducting from Boston University. He grew up in a Baptist church and has served as Music Assistant at churches in Charlotte NC, Greenville SC, and Cambridge MA. He is currently finished with coursework and working on his dissertation to earn his PhD in Musicology at UNC Chapel Hill. Stephen's dissertation focuses on the place of civil rights freedom song in US culture since 1968. Stephen also teaches courses at UNC, including Intro to Rock, Intro to Jazz, and Intro to Bluegrass. Stephen was ordained on November 10, 2013 at Greenwood Forest and is excited to be living out his ministerial calling in our community.
Stephen is married to Elizabeth Stacks, and they have a beautiful daughter named Clare. Stephen, Elizabeth, and Clare live in Apex.
